I was born and raised in Manville, NJ and had a great childhood growing up in Somerset County. At a time when everyone seemed to have 4-5 kids, there was never a shortage of friends to play with whether it be sports, kick the can, flashlight tag, fishing, ice skating or sleigh riding. Manville was and truly still is a small American town where everyone seems to know each other and help each other out when needed.
At Manville High School, I was very active with the football team, student council, coaching little league baseball in town and organizing Cappy’s Crew, which was our student cheering section at basketball games named after our old Athletic Director James Capano. We had a blast at all the games and as you can imagine, I cannot repeat most of the organized cheers we used back then. My senior year, I was honored to have been named Class Wit.
I went to college at Trenton State College majoring in Marketing and History with minors in Business Management and Geography. I had a great time during my 4 1/2 years at college and learned a lot. In the last 15 years, in order to learn about acting, I have earned plenty of college credits from the Raritan Valley Community College Theatre Department.
During the 1980’s, I lived in West Palm Beach, Florida selling 3M office equipment for Lanier Business Products. I enjoyed learning the sales profession and also realized that the harder I worked the more successful I became. I was promoted to Sales Manager of the West Palm Beach District were I loved teaching and motivating a sales force.
In 1990, since I missed the change of seasons, I moved back to my roots in New Jersey. I started selling Real Estate in 1992 and fell in love with the industry. It gives me an opportunity to utilize my vast sales experience plus I love to go in and out of the homes on the market as I help buyers and sellers alike. What a great way to earn a living!
In 1990, my old gym teacher and former Manville High School Athletic Director talked me into officiating high school sports. I started off umpiring high school baseball and softball. Then in the fall of 1990, I began officiating football, my great love. I have been blessed to be around a great group of officials, coaches and, of course, kids. I never realized how much fun it could be until I got out there blowing the whistle. I also officiate a couple high school basketball games now but gave up on the baseball and softball.
I have officiated many Somerset County and State High School Softball Championships. Each one was an honor to be assigned to and they were thrilling to the end. In football, I have been assigned to 4 High School State Finals with my officiating crew. including the 2013 final at MetLife Stadium and the 2014 final at Rowan University. In 2012, we had a final at the College of New Jersey that went into double overtime, so 3 years in a row is a big honor for me and my crew.
Yes, I love football. Always have and always will. Since playing on the sandlots in Manville as a child to officiating a High School State Championship in MetLife Stadium, football has always been there for me. It not only relieves stress but it gives me an opportunity to grow as a person. Each game I learn a little bit more about myself and how forgiving and giving I can be. There’s more to officiating a football game then just calling penalties. You learn how to manage people who are in direct conflict with each other and try to do it in a professional manner, keeping control and emotions in check. Sounds a bit like Real Estate, doesn’t it?
And there is something magical about lining up at the 50 yard line, in the middle of the field, with my officiating crew at my side, holding our hats over our hearts as the home team’s band plays our national anthem in front of 5000 or even 100 fans. Each time, I thank God for the opportunity that I was given to officiate that game.
For kicks, as time permits, I love to golf and act in Community Theatre. Central Jersey is loaded with outstanding golf courses and local acting troupes. I prefer to do comedies as there is something special about the audience’s immediate response to your efforts. You either hear the laughs or crickets. Either way you know how you are doing. You don’t have to ask. We have plenty of very talented and educated thespians in Central Jersey who work hard to put on very good productions at a number of Community Theatres.
Since 2012, I have been blogging about my favorite team, the Miami Dolphins. You can find my posts on the original blog that started covering the Miami Dolphins when the internet started, Bitchin’ Dave’s Ramblings About The Miami Dolphins. In 2014, as an invited guest of the Miami Dolphins, I attended their 11th Web Weekend. Other web sites who cover the Dolphins and myself stayed in the team hotel with the team, toured the stadium and training facility, had an awards banquet for best web sites covering the Dolphins and then on Sunday, got sideline passes and club level seats to the game against San Diego, which we won 37-0. During the 3 day event we met many current and former Dolphins, the GM and team CEO. All for putting my opinion about my beloved Dolphins on paper. Well, actually its the internet.
Between my work and my other interests, I try to live a very full life with my family and friends. I currently live in Hillsborough, NJ.
Central New Jersey offers so much diversity in its people and its beautiful landscapes from farmlands to beaches to its proximity to NYC and Philadelphia. If you live here, you will find Central New Jersey offers so many activities that, truly, there is never a dull moment.
